Project Overview

The Black Student Union website serves as a national hub of mentorship, leadership support, and community building for Black students — whether their campus BSU is thriving, struggling, or nonexistent. Powered by the Black Doctoral Network and anchored in community empowerment, the platform offers mentorship matching, leadership resources, exclusive masterclasses, and engaged support for students, officers, advisors, and alumni.

Challenges

Before the redesign, the platform needed to address:

  • Unclear pathways for students to find mentorship and leadership tools

  • Limited storytelling about the mission and benefits of joining the BSU network

  • Ineffective navigation for different user groups — students, officers, faculty, and alumni

  • Low user engagement due to a lack of modern, interactive features

The Strategy

We developed a strategy centered on clarity, accessibility, and community empowerment:
Our approach included:

  • Clear value messaging that communicates who the Black Student Union is for and why it exists — emphasizing mentorship, connection, and personal growth. 

  • Segmented user pathways for students, chapter leaders, advisors, and alumni — each with tailored information and support resources. 

  • Step-by-step journey explanations including sharing your story, finding a mentor, and growing leadership skills. 

  • Strong calls-to-action to join the network, register a campus BSU, or connect with mentorship resources.

Visual Direction: clean layouts, culturally resonant visuals, and intuitive content hierarchy.

Execution & Implementation

Using WordPress and thoughtful UX design:
Key execution points:

  • Homepage redesign with a compelling hero statement inviting all students to join the legacy network

  • Mentorship journey pages outlining how students share their story, get matched with mentors, and grow in leadership roles 

  • Dedicated sections for the benefits of membership, national forums, masterclasses, and leadership calls

  • Responsive layout ensuring accessibility on all devices

  • Visibility improvements for calls-to-action such as “Join Today” and “Register Your Campus BSU”
